You know your subject…
but does your expertise translate into student learning?
One of the greatest challenges of secondary education is ensuring student
interest and understanding of the subject matter. It should be the goal
of every teacher to instruct in a way that engages all students in
learning!
Key Factors of Effective Teaching
Effective teaching of any kind requires two separate sets of skills & knowledge.
Subject Matter Expertise is knowledge of the topic which is being taught.
Instructional Expertise is the ability to transfer that information to the student successfully.
Most teachers do not have a problem with the Subject Matter Expertise
part of the equation; however; effective teaching is more than just
simply knowing about a subject and regurgitating it to the students in a
lecture-style classroom. For this reason, having Instructional Expertise
is a critical skill for teachers!
Instructional Expertise requires the following:
Interactive learning
Learning leadership
Organization of knowledge
Proper presentation in a variety of formats for students
who have different learning styles and preferences
Discussion about the topic in a way that the students can
understand and learn from
Ways to assess student learning
Ability to address different types of learning styles and
students with special needs
